Larson Farm Equipment Workshop (8/25/10): Recap and Video

On August 25th, we held our 4th New Farmer Workshop at the Larson Farm, where Rich walked us through safety and maintenance tips for a wide variety of farm tools – from simple hand tools to tractors.

Rich gave common-sense advice and anecdotal stories to teach safe usage of tool and equipment used daily on small farms including:

  • Sledge Hammers
  • Wrenches
  • Circular Saws
  • Electric Drills
  • Chainsaws
  • Manure Spreaders and other PTO driven pieces of equipment
  • Tractors (lift arms, starting, stopping and parking, PTO safety, bucket usage, ROPS, hillside operation, passengers and more)
  • Post Pounders
  • Hay Wagons
  • V-Belts and Pulleys
  • Jack Knives
  • Farm Animals
  • Pick Up Trucks

Resource Discussed:

  • Chainsaw safety was seen as a very important consideration on the farm.  One good way to learn the safe usage of a saw is to complete the “Game of Logging” offered by the Woodland Owners Association.  The Game of Logging offers a variety of logging safety courses.
  • There is a women’s only Level 1 course coming up September 11th in Newfane.  Check out a schedule of all trainings in our area here.
